Find your WHY

Find your why with Prabin Gautam

Being an entrepreneur takes a lot of hard work. But careers that work you the hardest are always the most rewarding.

Many of you might know that I moved to Australia from Nepal in 2005. I started my life in Australia as a student, completing my Master’s degree at La Trobe, with a $37,000 student loan and no networks. I worked in a call centre for Telstra, providing tech support to clients, before venturing out to start my own business just two years later. Throughout those years, I found that the most important thing to becoming a successful entrepreneur is to find your purpose – find your “why.”

“When you’re clear on your “why,” “what” comes easily.”

I truly believe that when you’re clear on your purpose for business, everything else involved with running your business finds its place. This is especially significant if you’re embarking on a new career pathway or business idea.

Entrepreneurs can have many different reasons for why they’re in business. Some have a passion or a set of skills that they want to share with the world. Others want to make a difference in their community. Some see a need for their product or service in the marketplace. Others simply want to earn a living. Most people have more than one “why” – every business owner wants to make money, but often they have another purpose for being in business.

Here are some things to consider when discovering your “WHY”:

  • Your personal “why” can help you find your business “why.” That’s because we often choose careers based on our personal interests and what we’re good at.
  • Create a goal. Business owners usually have one big goal, however it’s helpful to define smaller goals to help you reach that. A good example is a financial goal to determine how much profit you want to make.
  • Connect. It’s helpful to find like-minded people in both your personal and professional life to support you to help you achieve your goals and commit to your “why.”

Running your own business is a lot of hard work and you’re sure to face many ups and downs. But if you remind yourself why you began your business in the first place, it’s all worthwhile.
